Co-ordinating Organisations
There are two main organisations that play a significant role in the food support network of NDG. Among their activities is the collection and distribution of food, the promotion of educational and self-help programs and the creation and co-ordination of collective gardens. Both organisations are excellent sources for further information.
Cafés
There are two cafés in or near NDG currently providing food at minimal prices. Both are non-profit organisations, run by volunteers, that cater to a primarily low-income population.
Churches
There are currently six churches that offer food services, catering to all denominations in the NDG area. Among these services are the provision of meals, food vouchers, contributions to the Food Depot and meals-on-wheels services. Some churches in NDG also run food programs, though internally for the members of their parish. The programs co-ordinated by the churches are volunteer based and run on donations.
Community Gardens
There are four community gardens in NDG, in which plots are rented for an annual period, and are used for growing fruits and vegetables for personal consumption. They also provide opportunities for meeting other people, relaxing and other therapeutic benefits. Some growing restrictions apply, and there are typically waiting lists.
*Note: also see co-initiatives (under 'Co-ordinating Organisations', above), who run several other gardening projects.
Depots and Resource Centres
These organisations are responsible for the distribution of food and information to low-income members of the NDG community. Goals include community building, self-empowerment, and increasing awareness of the full range of services available in NDG.
Health Care Centres
These organisations cater to the health and well-being of all members of the community. Programs designed for specific clientele provide physical and social support.
Meals-On-Wheels and Food Pantries
As a component of their other services, several organisations provide meals directly to the home. Typical clients include those with reduced mobility, such as senior citizens or physically disabled residents. Food Pantries put together food baskets and food vouchers that can then be collected by low-income members of the community.
Residences and Rehabilitation Centres
A variety of health services are provided in NDG whose programs cater specifically to individuals in special-need situations. Included amongst their services are the provision of meals, as well as planning, shopping and assistance in meal preparation.
Supporting Organisations Outside NDG
These organisations, although not located directly in NDG, are also valuable sources of information that offer alternatives and guidance to further support the food network.
